Die Absteige zur bärtigen Therese lädt 2026 zu 3 Residencies für Musiker:innen ein. Im Rahmen von PINK:HILL ist der Komponist und Musiker Brian Lawlor zu Gast. Die Konzerte bei der Therese sind sehr persönliche, kleine Gasthaus Konzerte. Vor dem Konzert empfehlen wir den Besuch vom BUBBLE BRUNCH.

Brian Lawlor ist Komponist, Multiinstrumentalist, Dirigent und Pädagoge aus New Jersey und lebt in Wien. Er studierte Komposition am Cornish College of the Arts (B.M.), an der SUNY Purchase (M.M.) sowie am Royal Conservatory of Music in Den Haag und schloss sein erstes Musikstudium bereits mit zwanzig Jahren ab.

Er erhielt zahlreiche Förderungen (u. a. Stadt Wien, New Music USA, MusiCares) und seine Musik wurde in Nordamerika, Europa und China aufgeführt. 15 Jahre lang war er Komponist und musikalischer Leiter der experimentellen Performance-Gruppe Saint Genet und arbeitete mit Ensembles vom Kammerorchester bis zum Synth-Trio. Engagements führten ihn u. a. zu Impulstanz, Wiener Festwochen, Holland Festival, DonauFestival und ins Guggenheim Museum.

Lawlor komponiert zudem für Tanz, Film, Werbung und Games (u. a. für National Geographic, Microsoft, Sony) und arbeitete mit Whim W’him von Olivier Wevers. Als gefragter Studio- und Tourmusiker in New York arbeitete er mit Künstler:innen wie Beyoncé und Laurie Anderson. In Wien kooperiert er mit zahlreichen österreichischen Acts und tritt regelmäßig bei Festivals und in Clubs auf.

PERFORMANCE STATEMENT
In dieser Performance verschmelzen scheinbar gegensätzliche Klangwelten zu einem eigenständigen, vielschichtigen Soundkosmos. Gebrauchte, auf Flohmärkten entdeckte Instrumente wie Taishōgoto, Balalaika oder teils funktionsfähige Keyboards treffen auf ein zeitgenössisches Setup aus kraftvollen Synthesizern und moderner Musiktechnologie (SOMA Pipe, Roli 5D-Keyboards, Genki Bluetooth Ring).

So entsteht eine weitläufige Klanglandschaft zwischen ruhigen und zugleich irritierenden Drones und Beats, improvisatorischen Strukturen und geschichteten postminimalistischen Texturen.

Die Kompositionen greifen zentrale Motive aus Lawlors Schaffen auf – von folkloristisch inspirierten Klangfarben bis hin zu quasi-atonalen Passagen, die auch seine großformatigen Ensemblewerke prägen. In diesem Setting werden sie jedoch in einer intimen, solistischen und frei gestalteten Form erlebbar.

Absteige zur bärtigen Therese invites three musicians for residency programs in 2026. As part of PINK:HILL, composer and musician Brian Lawlor will be in residence. Concerts at Therese are intimate, personal living room performances. Before the concert, we recommend joining the BUBBLE BRUNCH.

Brian Lawlor is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, conductor, and educator from New Jersey, currently based in Vienna. He studied composition at Cornish College of the Arts (B.M.), SUNY Purchase (M.M.), and the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague, completing his first music degree at the age of twenty.

He has received numerous grants and fellowships (including from the City of Vienna, New Music USA, and MusiCares), and his music has been performed throughout North America, Europe, and China. For 15 years, he served as composer and music director of the experimental performance group Saint Genet, collaborating with ensembles ranging from chamber orchestras to synth trios. Engagements have included Impulstanz, Wiener Festwochen, Holland Festival, DonauFestival, and the Guggenheim Museum.

Lawlor also composes for dance, film, advertising, and video games (including work for National Geographic, Microsoft, and Sony) and has collaborated with Olivier Wevers’ dance company Whim W’him. As an in-demand session and touring musician in New York, he has worked with artists such as Beyoncé and Laurie Anderson. In Vienna, he collaborates with numerous Austrian acts and regularly performs at festivals and clubs. His diverse albums are available on all streaming platforms.

PERFORMANCE STATEMENT

In this performance, seemingly contrasting sonic worlds merge into a distinctive and multilayered sound universe. Second-hand instruments discovered at flea markets—such as taishōgoto, balalaika, and partially functioning keyboards—meet a contemporary setup of powerful synthesizers and modern music technology (SOMA Pipe, Roli 5D keyboards, Genki Bluetooth Ring).

The result is a vast sonic landscape oscillating between calm and unsettling drones and beats, improvisational structures, and layered post-minimal textures.

The compositions draw on central themes from Lawlor’s body of work—ranging from folk-inspired tonalities to quasi-atonal passages that also shape his large-scale ensemble pieces. In this setting, however, they are presented in an intimate, solo, and freely structured form.
